Chicago 2016 Farmers Markets season kicks off on May 12 at Daley Plaza
“Chicago’s Farmers Markets bring fresh produce directly to our communities, and also serve as gathering spots to help build a stronger social fabric for our neighborhoods,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel. “Each year these markets provide more of our residents and families with access to fresh, healthy, and sustainable foods while also supporting our local farms and food producers.”
The markets, managed by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE), will sell fresh fruits, vegetables, plants, and flowers, as well as other prepared food items. A complete list of city-run and independent markets, along with dates and times can be found at chicagofarmersmarkets.us.
This year, a select number of City of Chicago-managed market locations will accept LINK and will distribute double value coupons with every LINK purchase. The City of Chicago and DCASE have partnered with Experimental Station in order to provide this greater access to fresh produce across the city, including some areas designated low-income, low-access by the U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA).
The official kick-off of Chicago’s 2016 Farmers Markets season will take place at the Daley Plaza Market on Thursday, May 12, at 11:30 am.
